Building Toys

I love Lego!  That said, I find it fun playing with different types of construction/building toys.  Currently we are amassing a collection of Duplo Lego.  I like the look and feel of the pieces and their durability.  There are a variety of different pieces and sets that add variety and make it interesting for Isaac to play with.  The main frustration with duplo bricks in general is that they come apart pretty easily so when we build a tall tower, it tends to topple over.  I'm still looking to pick up a few more specific sets if I can find them on sale from Lego, Toys R Us or at Value Village.

Mega bloks can be used with duplo blocks, though they feel a little cheaper in quality and the nubs aren't finished as nicely as the duplo nubs.  There are also a variety of mega bloks sets and they generally cost less then lego ones.  I confess that I bought a mixed bag of mega bloks just to get some of the duplo pieces that were included in the bag, then donated the mega bloks back to value village.  We were recently given a mega bloks pirate ship, though we left it at the Grandparent's place.  I will have to see what the boy thinks of it and what we can do with it.  We will test it out in a few months when we go visit our family.

I found a small set of Infinitoy Zoob with 15 pieces.  These are pieces are ball / socket types of parts which can snap together in different ways.  We can't really do too much since we only have 15 pieces, but Isaac likes to pull the pieces apart when I snap them together.

We were having a web chat with grandparents the other day and we needed to keep the boy entertained  in his booster seat, so I whipped out a "new" building set from Value Village.   He was very focused playing with the bricks and spent over an hour trying to see what they could do and how they worked together.  Morphun Junior Blocks come in square and triangular pieces of varying height (depth).  Some square pieces have nubs on top - these look like the duplo 2x2 pieces except they have a ridged 1/2 circle indentation on each side and a ridged circle on the underside.  The pieces connect with slide-in spindle pieces or by stacking square nubbed pieces on top of each other.  The nubbed pieces are compatible with Duplo (provided the spindles don't stick out if they're used).  I like the different ways the pieces can connect together and it's great that it can work with duplo bricks.  The only disappointment is that Isaac broke a Morphun brick by jamming a spindle through a square block.

Rain gear

Rain coat... check
Splash pants... check
Rain boots... check
Rain hat... check

The boy is all ready to play in the rain.   I just picked up a pair of rain boots in size 9 and rain hat in size 3/4T from Please Mum.

We had our creative movements class this morning.  He always looks forward to the class... though when we're there, I have to chase after him since he likes running out of the room.  He fell asleep on our way home, so I dropped him off and went off to run some errands.  It's so nice that Daddy works from home.

Dinner we had cream of mushroom soup with macaroni, mushrooms, ham and broccoli.  We also had some avocado and Isaac had a yogurt.  He kept asking for the mini honey mandarins I picked up from a grocery store today.  I bought a small bag of them... but they're all gone now.  I might go get some more tomorrow.   I like them too.  They're really sweet and tasty!

I went out to a preschool info session this evening while Daddy fed the boy dinner and gave him a bath.  I met up with the other parents from our play group at the info session.  We'll have to fill out a lottery request form to try to apply for the program.  There's a long waitlist for the current sessions... I hope that we'll be able to get a spot this fall.  It sounds like a great program.

When I got home, Isaac ran up to me and gave me a huge smile.  Then he went off to play again.  I finished my dinner, and we put Isaac to bed.  Tomorrow we'll be heading over G's place to play with G and J.

Getting back into a routine with Daddy.

Daddy got back late Sunday night. Daddy took the day off yesterday so that we could spend some time together. We went out for dim sum, ran some errands, I got my hair cut and Daddy took the boy to get his hair cut. On their way back to pick me up, Isaac fell asleep. We picked up some frozen sashimi from Black Ocean (a seafood wholesale store in Richmond). After his nap, Daddy went grocery shopping and I took Isaac out for a walk. We hed a webchat with my parents then had a friend come over for dinner (Sashimi, cucumber and rice).

This morning, the boy got up asking for "Dada" to get him out of his crib. We played lego, had breakfast together, went to the potty, then went out to look at the construction trucks outside. For lunch, we had soup noodles with carrots, napa, chicken balls, and fish tofu. I was able to get the boy to feed himself by offering to let him cut some boiled carrots with a knife if he ate the noodles off his tray first.

After lunch and potty time, I got Isaac down for a nap at 1:30pm. Tonight Daddy's making ribs for dinner. Yum! It's so nice having Daddy back home. :D

Survival Test - Day 15 of 15

Last day.

Bad night - screaming at 3am until 4ish-am. Up earlier than I'd like. Fed the boy breakfast.

We have a birthday party to attend today. 1hr bus ride. I think I need to pick up snacks or toys for the trip. Not sure how to time lunch. Probably need to give him a snack before we go.

We stopped by value village, McDonalds (lunch), I picked up some junk food from a chinese grocery store, then saw the bus pass by. I ran to the next bus stop with Isaac in the stroller and we were able to catch the bus (it was waiting at the skytrain station for a little). We ended up getting to the party about 15 minutes early (and were the first ones to arrive).

Isaac ran around the party room, played with balloons in a tent, and ate some noodles. By 2:30pm, he was tired and down for a nap. I put him in the stroller. He missed out on the birthday cake and games. He woke up just as I was getting ready to leave (about 4pm). He got a little book and loot bag of goodies. I guess I should think about a kids birthday party for Isaac. We should have some SCBP friends come over.

After the party, we walked to the skytrain station with one of our friends and chatted for a bit. We transferred to a bus and walked home. I picked up some pho noodles for dinner on our way back. Isaac had a yogurt, some pho noodles, grilled chicken and beef balls.

Survival Test - Day 14 of 15

Isaac got up at 7:14am... I tried putting him on the potty but he didn't have to go. I went back to bed and got up at 8:00am. He wanted me to play with him but I told I wasn't getting up until 8, so he could play by himself or go to his crib. He pretty much left me alone for a bit.

After I got up, we played Lego for 0.5 hours. I made some rice and fed him breakfast. Put him on the potty and got ready for swimming. When we got to the pool, there were lots of parking spots... I looked at the clock and we're almost late. By the time we got changed and into the pool, the class was already started.

Class was good. Isaac was blowing lots of bubbles, splashing the water and got his ears dipped. We left the parking lot at 10:17am. Got home, gave Isaac a bath, took a shower while he watched Word World. Made some veggies now it's time for lunch. Annoyed my safari window crashed and I have to retype my blog entry!

Isaac had yogurt, pieces of mandarin, apple juice, pieces of an english muffin with beef dip and some veggies (broccoli and cauliflower). After Isaac ate, I had my turn. He asked for some "nye-nye", but I told him I wanted to finish my "mum-mum" first. I turned the tv onto a skiing show but he didn't want to watch it so he went to play with his lego. Every so often, he would come to check if I still had food in my bowl. When I finished eating, I gave him milk and he fell asleep (around 1pm).

I did the swimming laundry, wrapped up a present for a birthday party we're attending tomorrow, uploaded some photos, and will be doing the dishes next.

Dishes had to wait. I was so tired I decided to nap... right after I packed away the leftover beef dip. Isaac woke up around 3pm or so and I stayed in bed until closer to 3:30pm. Got up and got pulled over to the lego bin. Put together a few pieces, then went to do the dishes. The boy wasn't happy about that, pulled himself up to look at the counter and kitchen sink and I pointed at the dishes telling him I had to wash them. He went to his lego and destroyed my buildings while I washed the dishes.

After, I gave him a mandarin fruit cup. We'll be going to take out some garbage and out for a walk to vv. Tonight's dinner will just be baby food and leftovers.

Dinner: spaghetti, mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes and butternut squash. Me: lunch leftovers and bok choy. We'll play for a bit and try to have an earlier bedtime.

I put him in bed at 8:30pm. I think he might've fallen asleep sometime after 9pm.

Survival Test - Day 13 of 15

Busy morning.

Up at 7:30am. I boiled 2 eggs (for myself) and we had bacon. I also gave Isaac some oatmeal and a fruit cup. Watched Ranma. I was a bit worried that he would be too tired for our 11am class so I tried to get him to nap... but of course that didn't go over well with him. After a bit fit in his crib, I took him out and let him do some finger painting with his red paint. He still doesn't have a word for "red" yet. I resisted the urge to buy Lego from the website even though the prices were marked down on top of the existing sale price. It was so tempting but I'm holding out for the sets on my wish list. I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't wait to buy his toy lego car since it's a little cheaper now, but it's ok. Most of the extra sale items cleared out pretty fast so I might've missed it if I waited.

Packed him up and we went off to the library to return our videos. After we went up to the dance studios. Isaac immediately headed to where we have our creative movement class so I had to tell him that we were doing a different class today. We headed to our music class. It went alright though he was a bit tired. Today we played with sticks, tapped a tambourine and shook some bells. I brought a toy truck to class to keep his hands occupied. He did a few actions from the songs but mostly watched.

After class, I gave Isaac a strawberry/apple sauce snack pouch and we stopped by the art gallery and museum. We went to Richmond Centre to pick up some veggies and mushrooms. I also got Isaac a pizza roll from Cobbs. Then we went to Save-On Foods to pick up some meat and other ingredients (for our dinner tonight). He was surprisingly good for being tired. I borrowed a "car" cart from the grocery store - it comes with a kid-sized steering wheels and I can buckle Isaac into the seat. He munched on the bread while I shopped.

Just as we got home, I told Isaac we're almost home and asked him if he wanted to nap. He nodded yes. When I parked the car and looked back, he was asleep. Transferred him into his crib (1:24pm) and went to get the groceries from the car.

Starving. I made spaghetti with zucchini, mushrooms and tomatoes for lunch. Tonight we're having baked chicken thighs with basil and garlic powder. I also plan to use the slow cooker overnight and make a beef dish for tomorrow so that we'll have lunch ready when we get home from swimming. I'm just eating now (2:40pm) and I highly doubt I'll get much of a nap today. Time for me to play some pogo while I eat.

He's having a pretty decent nap. I heard him wake up briefly as I was doing the dishes but he went back to sleep. I guess it'll be a very late lunch and a light dinner for him. I bet if I went in to take a nap he'd wake up.

He woke up at 3:55pm. Time for lunch. I'm giving him the spaghetti, zucchini, mushrooms and tomatoes. He's also having some apple juice and his pizza roll. He also had a mandarin.

After lunch, we went for a walk to vv. We came home and Daddy called. Isaac talked to Daddy for a little, then we connected on a web chat. I baked some chicken thighs and made some bok choy for dinner. The boy also had mixed grains and a yogurt. Dinner was pretty late (around 7pm). After dinner, we played some lego and I put him to bed around 9:20pm. I'm guessing he was pretty tired because he went to sleep without a fuss. I did the dishes then prepared a crock pot recipe (started the crock pot at 10:30pm). Hopefully the "Best Beef Dip Ever" will taste good for tomorrow. Washed more dishes.

Time to shop... I mean "window browse" online. Well, that or play pogo... or both! Can't stay up too late since we have swimming lessons tomorrow morning.

Survival Test - Day 12 of 15

I just DON'T want to get up this morning... but we have a playgroup session scheduled at E's. Also, eating instant noodles before bed last night doesn't seem to agree with my stomach.

The boy woke up at 12:30am, then at 3 something and wouldn't go back to sleep until 4:30 or so (including a trip to the potty). I kept threatening to leave the room every time to got up and he'd lie back down immediately, but after a little while would get up again. Up for the day around 7:40am or something.

Time to get breakfast together and get ready. I offered a ride to K & G, but if they take my offer... I'll need to move Isaac's car seat over to a side to make room for G's. No food plans today. Oh what will we eat for lunch or dinner?

We had a full morning. I drove to K & G's to pick them up and we shifted Isaac's car seat over to make space for G's car seat. We went over to E & J's house to play for the morning. E made me and Isaac some lunch (vermicelli and dumplings). We dropped K & G off then came home. I moved Isaac's car seat back to the middle. This took a bit longer since he was all over the place (climbed to the front passenger seat, pulled out Daddy's stuff in the cd holder compartment, etc. We walked into our place at 1pm. Now I'm trying to get Isaac down for a nap.

Finally fell asleep at 2pm. I think I want to nap too.

Didn't nap, but I did get some do my daily pogo challenges. After the boy woke up, we had some dumplings then went to the library to pick up Monsters vs. Aliens and Ranma 1/2 (guilty pleasure). I'm not sure if I still like it or not, but I'll watch an episode or two tomorrow morning and see. We stopped by vv on our way home but didn't find anything interesting.

We had a chat with Daddy then snacked on miso soup, a granola bar, and spaghetti bolognese (Michelina's). We (mostly Mommy) watched Monsters vs. Aliens, and we played some lego. It was a bit late (sometime after 9pm) before we started our bedtime routine: brush teeth, read stories (, potty), and bed. After I put him in his crib, I went to do the dishes. No fussing from the boy at all. He turned on his aquarium with the bubbles and lights on then went to sleep. I checked on him after I did the dishes and put a blanket over him.

Survival Test - Day 11 of 15

The boy was up at 1:30am and wanted to go to the potty. He peed and pooped then went back to his crib without a fuss. Up at 6:30am. I kept trying to go back to sleep but couldn't get him to settle down.

Going to make breakfast now. Hope he doesn't get too sleepy in class today. Class was good though the teacher was late this morning. I picked up a McNugget happy meal for the boy. He only had one McNugget. I think he'll be hungry when he wakes up. I'll probably give him some yogurt or left-over soup when he wakes up.

I gave him yogurt when he woke up. After, we went out for a walk. I bumped into my previous volunteer supervisor when I was shopping at vv. We chatted briefly and had to go home to make dinner.

For dinner is was mostly leftovers. Isaac had mixed grains, a small jar of carrot, some soup, some chicken drumsticks and mushrooms. I offered him some grilled vegetables, but he wasn't interested in eating that. He seems to be losing interest in the mushrooms too. I had some rice. During and after dinner, we watched Kung fu panda. He watched part of the movie but didn't seem to like it (and kept wanting to be nursed). For parts of the movie, we played "choo-choo" with his toy cars. After the movie finished, I gave him a bath, brushed his teeth, read him some stories and put him in bed. I told him I had to shower and left the room. He called for me once, but I told him what I was going to do. After I dried my hair, I heard him call out "all done" from his crib. I went to check on him, tucked him in again and told him I had to do the dishes (like Mama Llama). After I finished the dishes, I checked on him again and he was asleep.

I repaired his astronaut book and hungry caterpillar book. Now it's time for me to play and surf for a bit.

Survival Test - Day 10 of 15

Just realized I miscounted the number of days... so I've corrected the post titles.

Since I was so tired last night, my recollection of the events is a bit fuzzy. He woke up at 2am and wanted to go to the potty. He actually did have to go, so that was good... He also woke up one other time, but I can't remember exactly when that was. I nursed him and let him sleep with me (well, I fell asleep). This morning, he got up at around 8:15am.

I don't have a lot planned for today. We're going to do some cleaning up; vacuum, do some garbage, etc. Time for me to get breakfast together.

Breakfast: oatmeal and mandarin fruit cup. I had a couple of eggos.

We spent the morning vacuuming. For lunch, I made some watercress and carrot soup. He's also eating some chicken from E and leftovers. I am feeling very frustrated that I can't find his water sippy cup. I know it's somewhere in this house but it's hiding somewhere. I wish that he could tell me where he put it. I have to try not to get so worked up about this since I'm sure it'll turn up sometime. In the meantime, I'll just give him water in a regular cup.

Nap started 1:38pm. The boy had a solid 2+ hour nap. He woke up and asked me for mum-mum. I took him out of his crib and he went to the kitchen and handed me one of his peach fruit cups. He seems to be in a good mood at the moment. He even requested I play the "I like to rise" song from his Zoom Zoom music album.

I'm going to take him out for a short walk, then come home and prepare dinner.

We didn't end up going out but I did make dinner (shake and bake chicken drumsticks) and we had a web chat with Daddy. I'm so thrilled I found the boy's sippy cup stuffed in his bookshelf.

After dinner, I took the boy out for a short walk. After we came home, I gave him some mommy milk, brushed his teeth, read him stories (Mr. Brown can moo, can you? Llama llama red pajama; and Good night little bunny).

I tried to get him to say the colours in Brown bear, brown bear what do you see? but he wasn't interested. Something I noticed is when I ask him what colour something red is, he says it's green. Could he be red-green colour blind!? I'll have to test this out if I can't teach him to identify red objects. He seems to recognize green, blue, brown, pink, yellow, orange. I'll try to work on the colours more. Maybe I'll do a colour theme day and let him finger paint with the colour and point out everything that is around the house with that colour.

As I red Llama llama red pajama to Isaac, I explained what was going on in the pictures as well as just reading the text. I pointed out that Mama llama had to go do dishes while the baby llama goes to bed. When I put him into his bed (a bit after 9pm), he didn't ask to go potty tonight. I asked him if mama can go do dishes, and he nodded so I tucked him in and left. He turned on his aquarium, but I haven't heard a peep from him since I finished the dishes.

Survival Test - Day 9 of 15

He woke up at 1:30am, 4:30am (no feed), and was up at 6:30am. He asked to go on the potty. After looking at a couple of books, I put his books away. He asked for another book. But when I didn't get it fast enough for him, he squirmed around and fell off his potty again. He hit his head on the side of the cabinet, but I was able to sort of catch him this time.

I wanted to go back to sleep, but he didn't. He came out to his play area and turned on the lights. I've got breakfast ready, but he's busy pulling out his art easel and has his smock on. I guess he wants to paint.

We had breakfast - oatmeal and peach-apple sauce. I had a couple pieces of Eggo. After I let him paint a picture and got him ready to go out. I had an adventure planned for us this morning. We had a quick visit to Value Village, then made our way to the skytrain station. We took the Canada Line to Oakridge mall and spent the morning there.

When we got to the mall, I borrowed a car-buggy stroller and we headed to the food court to have a snack. I got a pick-your-own salad and gave Isaac a mandarin fruit cup. We took a quick look inside Gap Kids, then headed to the toy section at Zellers. Isaac had a blast playing with a yo gabba gabba mega bloks toy; it had buttons and made noise. He was upset when I took the box away. After Zellers, we went to return the stroller.

I asked Isaac if he wanted to play in the kids area. He said yes, so we stayed there for awhile. At first he seemed a bit tentative about it all, but got into it after a little. There's a slope in the play area, he kept trying to walk up, then proceeded to fall and slide down. Later, he'd try to turn around and slide down fowards. He started running around the play area, and another little boy started following Isaac and copying everything he did. Isaac didn't seem to notice or care at all, but I found it really cute to watch.

We stopped by the bakery, washroom, then headed back to the Canada Line. Next we went to Aberdeen mall. I ordered some dim sum for lunch, and we picked up 1/2 pound of bbq pork and a kid-sized pair of chopsticks for Isaac. When we stopped by the water fountain, I let Isaac drop in a penny. There was a granny sitting there watching and she also gave Isaac 2 pennies to drop in. He was starting to yawn and it was time to go. As we were waiting for the skytrain to arrive, Isaac fell asleep (shortly after 1pm).

I lugged him from the station to the bus stop and waited for a bus to take us home. My ticket was close to expiring, but it was lucky the bus driver let us on early. Isaac woke up when we got into our building. I tried to put him back to sleep again, but have remained unsuccessful. I fed him some dim sum and may take him out for a walk in the stroller if he doesn't fall asleep soon.

This evening, my friend's husband is dropping off some food for us - though I already have plans for what we're making tonight. I've got ribs defrosted in the fridge.

It's 4:23pm and no second nap. I guess I'll have to try for an earlier bedtime instead. Time to start preparing dinner.

Dinner for me: rice, ribs, bok choy. Isaac didn't want any ribs or bok choy, so he got yogurt, mixed grains, and butternut squash for his dinner. After dinner, I did dishes, we took the garbage out and I gave the boy a bath. He seems ready for bed now (7:49pm). In bed at 8pm, asleep at 8:15pm.

Survival Test - Day 8 of 15

Isaac woke up at 1am, 5:30am (potty) and got up 8:30am. He had oatmeal, pomegranate motts, and half a mandarin for breakfast. After potty time, I put a pair of bear-bear underwear on him (10am). I plan to change him back into diapers after about an hour.

We went to Toys R Us to play this morning... but Daddy called us so we had to go home. I made us some dumplings for lunch and we had a webchat with Daddy, Grandma and Grandpa. After lunch, Mommy was sleepy so tried to take a nap, but Isaac just went crazy in his crib. He chucked out everything from his crib and even pulled up one of the corners of the crib mattress cover.

After an hour, I let him out of the crib. He's still in a bad mood from screaming in his crib. I guess I will take him to the library and VV this afternoon. Who knows when or IF he'll nap!?! Nevermind, I guess we'll go out later. He just fell asleep while I was on the couch with him.

After he woke up from his nap, he snacked on a delmonte peach fruit cup. We went to Value Village, came home and made dinner. We had yet-ca-mein noodles with chicken broth, carrots, chicken balls, fish tofu and bok choy. I'm pretty convinced I have a wheat sensitivity. Since dinner, the inside of my mouth has this scratchy texture and my stomach isn't feeling so great. I checked the ingredients on the noodles and it's made with wheat.

After dinner, we played some "cho-cho" with his lego and I read him a story. I browsed some ebay auctions then put the boy to bed. In bed at 9:10pm, asleep at 9:45pm.

Survival Test - Day 7 of 15

Ahhh!  We got up at 9am.  Isaac actually woke up at 6:30am, but we went back to sleep.  This morning was a scramble.  I basically threw on our swimming suits, clothes, and headed out to class.  No time for breakfast.  I just gave Isaac some mommy milk before we left the house so that he wouldn't starve.

We got into the pool 5 minutes before class started.  Class was pretty good.  Isaac blew bubbles to show Auntie K.  After class, I changed Isaac and put him into G's stroller.  He snacked while I got changed.  We left the pool at 10:17am.

When we got home, I gave Isaac a bath, and fed him breakfast.  Now it's my turn to take a shower.  Hopefully Elmo's World will keep Isaac entertained for a little.  He checked on me once after he heard the hair dryer turned off.  I ate some left-over pasta.  Then did the laundry from swimming.  Just going to start the dryer before we head out to walk around Value Village.  We didn't end up buying anything, but I was able to donate an old sweater and some megablocks.

I tried to put the boy down for a nap at 2pm, but he wouldn't sleep so I gave him lunch at 2:30pm and tried again afterwards.  He finally fell asleep at 3:45pm.

He got up from his nap at 5:15pm.  We played for a bit, then M&L came with sushi for dinner.  Isaac had butternut squash, salmon, some avocado, and a few bites of chopped scallop.  He played with M&L for over 1.5 hours mostly with lego, messed with some magnets, got some basket rides, played with some power drill/saw toys, showed his squirrel art and craft, and fed alfredo.

I started his bedtime routine at a bit after 8:30pm.  Got him into his crib at 9:20pm.  I can hear him pressing the buttons on his aquarium.  Asleep at 10pm.

One week down, one week to go before Daddy comes back home.

Survival Test - Day 6 of 15

So tired.  I shouldn't have stayed up so late last night.  The boy was up at midnight, 2am, 5:30am and up for the day at 7:30am.  At 2am, he fell back asleep while I was changing his diaper, so I just moved him back to his crib after.

Breakfast: strawberry motts and a big bowl of oatmeal.  Rain, rain.  *sighs*  I think I might drive to class.  I'm going to need a nap before my friend visits this afternoon.

Took out some garbage then drove to the library, tried to see if Isaac would sit in on story time (no he wasn't interested), then we went to music class.  I have some reservations about the class.  For one thing, he kept wanting to leave after 15 minutes.  The class is 45 minutes long.  It's mostly just sitting in a circle singing songs - which is a bit tough for Isaac since he doesn't like just sitting there.  There are some songs where you move around, but the instructor doesn't really want your child running all over the room... I like that there was some arts and crafts and exposure to different simple instruments.  Today they played with sticks to tap out rhythms.  We'll try the class again next week and see.  If it doesn't work for us, then I'll probably withdraw from it.

While we were out, our Lego car got delivered.  I'm so glad the delivery guy was willing to leave it at our door!!!  Yay!  Isaac loves his new toy car.  He didn't want to eat or nap... just play.  I regret not saving the toy until AFTER his nap.  Cries ensued when I took it away.  All he had to eat was a few bites of bread and mommy milk.  Oh well, I'll try to feed him when he wakes up.  I'm not sure how this afternoon will go.  Mommy's having a friend over to have some bubble tea.  So SO tired.  I must eat lunch though.

The boy is sweating in his sleep.  I stripped off his clothing and put a thin blanket over him.  I also opened the window a crack to let him some air.  Hope he cools down without getting too cold.  Time for me to close my eyes until my friend arrives.

P stayed for a couple of hours.  We had bubble tea from Bubble Queen.  The boy woke up, played lego with P, ate an avocado (and had some of my strawberry mango slushie), and went to the potty.  Tonight's dinner offering: pasta, ham, cream of mushroom, and broccoli.  Me, I'm planning to eat rice, left over rice and beef broccoli plus some of the pasta.  I was up late updating my ebay account and watching an auction on a lego duplo trainset.  I'm tempted to bid on if it stays in my price range (I've also factored in the shipping costs).  ... Nevermind.  I just checked the bids and it's now out of the range I'm willing to pay - though it's still cheaper than a similar lot on Craigslist.  I'll just keep my eyes out for bits and pieces of duplo track while I'm at Value Village.

For dinner, Isaac had a bowl of macaroni, with turkey bacon, broccoli, and cream of mushroom.  He finished his yogurt for dessert.  I had some of the pasta for dinner after he ate.  We went to vv after dinner.  I put Isaac into bed at 9:15pm.  I hope he'll go to sleep soon.

Asleep at 9:37pm.

Survival Test - Day 5 of 15

Oh... where to begin?  Lots of wake-ups.  A bit before midnight, he woke up and I changed his diaper (it was still pretty empty).  Nursed him, then decided that his nose really did need some nose drops.  Turned on the lights, wrestled him down to get in some nose drops, then nursed him a bit more and put him to bed.  After a little bit, he started screaming.  Not sure if anything was wrong (no limbs were stuck in the crib rails).  I picked him up, snuggled with him and let him lie down with me in bed for a little.  Put him back in his crib.  Quiet for a bit, then he starts getting upset again.  I shushed him and he stopped crying.  I vaguely recall this happening again at least one more time.  Then I'm finally asleep.  Roughly before 5:30am, the boy is standing in his crib asking for milk.  I look at the clock and tell him to go back to sleep.  He occasionally lies down, but moves around in his crib a lot.  The batteries die in his aquarium and he gets upset and keeps slapping at it trying to turn the thing on.  I get up and remove the aquarium from his crib and try to reassure him that I'll change the batteries after I get up.

6am, I give up and nurse him in bed.  We both fall asleep.  I wake up at 9am and leave the boy in bed.  He just woke up about 10 minutes after I got up.  Time to replace the Mr. Fishy's batteries.  I really don't think AA batteries are a good substitute for C batteries.  Mr. Fishy is working again and has relocated to the other side of his crib.  Time for breakfast.

Isaac had a bowl of oatmeal and a mandarin fruit cup.  He was very cooperative because I told him his friends were coming over to play soon so he should hurry up.  G got here just as Isaac finished breakfast.  I put the boy on the potty, and he was really good and quick.  He wanted to play with G.  J arrived shortly after, and I left them to pick up some milk from Save-On Foods.  Toys were scattered all over the place when I got back and everything was in full-swing.  The boys ate lunch then headed home (around 12:30pm).  I'm trying to get Isaac to have his lunch now.

Ack!  I think Isaac snorted a piece of spaghetti up his nasal cavity somewhere.  He was laughing at something then suddenly choked and started crying and pointing at his nose.  I didn't know what to do, so I put saline drops into his nose and nursed him.  He's still pointing at his nose and whining.  I'm not sure what else I can do.  It's the second time this has happened to him.  I hope it resolves itself soon or I'll have to take him to the doctors - though I don't really see what they can do about it either.

He seems back to normal again though he refused to nap at his normal time.  I gave up at 2pm and took him out of his crib.  We went out to vv and the mall.  I used part of my sprize points and bought him a new gap raincoat in size 4T. 3T fits, but I figure the 4T he can grow into.  Gap is ending Sprize in February.  It's too bad, since I think it did get me to buy more clothes from their store.  Snacked on an egg tart at the mall.

I feel like things are reverting back to normal - dirty dishes, no clue about what to eat, etc.  I picked up some Shanghai dumplings for Isaac, and a beef broccoli dish for myself.  I made some rice at lunch that I didn't get around to eating, so that's ready.  Time for me to do the dishes and eat before Isaac wakes up.  His nap started at 4:08pm.  I'll have to make sure he's up by 5:15pm or so.

Dishes washed, toys tidied, caught up on some news (yay Target coming to Canada).  Something about food always taste so much better when you're starving.  Mmm... beef broccoli.  I might need to make more rice.

I woke the boy up at 5:48pm.  He had a dinner/web chat with Daddy, had a bath, played some lego, then bedtime.  I don't think he fell asleep until sometime after 10pm.  I hope that he'll sleep alright tonight.

Survival Test - Day 4 of 15

I'm feeling a bit short-tempered this morning.  The boy won't let me eat my breakfast.  We also had a minor mishap in the washroom - Isaac was acting up and squirming around and ended up falling off the potty with his mouth hitting my knee.  His teeth are still intact, and I didn't see any bleeding so it's probably sore, but he should be ok.

Breakfast: bacon, oatmeal, mandarin fruit cup.  Me... I'm still looking at my toast and bacon...

We have our first class of creative movement class this morning.  Not sure if he can stay awake for it but we'll see.  I'm still deciding if I should walk or drive.  There's snow on the ground, but it's raining.

I drove.  It was good that I did since not all of the sidewalks were cleared and I would've been late otherwise.  We returned our library books, enjoyed the creative movements class, said hi to the volunteer at the art gallery, snacked on a mandarin, picked up a cheese & tomato roll from Cobbs, bought some veggies from Kins Market, and came home.

Now we're going to watch Word World while I feed the boy some strawberry motts and let him finish his Cobbs roll.  He finished at least 3/4 of the roll. Nap at 12:57pm.  Lunch time for Mommy - shephard's pie and 2 turkey hotdogs.

After a 1.5 hour nap, the boy wanted to get up and play.  If I sit here typing, he comes to me and pulls my hand, leading me away towards his lego.  I was thinking of doing a bunch of things this afternoon, but it looks like we might just play lego instead.

We played lego, I did laundry, we went to vv.  We had a web chat with Daddy during dinner.  Isaac had some avocado, chicken, yogurt, bites of bok choy, and bites of mixed grain.  After the web chat, he played around for a little in Daddy's office, then we started our bedtime routine.

He's currently talking in his crib and seems to be testing his squeals but doesn't sound upset.  I feel a bit tired out today.  On a positive note, Isaac's diaper has been completely dry since 4pm and it's now 8:35pm.  I took him to the potty after dinner and before bed.  Now he's calling for me, so I think I'll go see what he wants.

I told the boy I'm going to take a shower (he rubbed his hair and nodded yes), and I told him he should go to sleep.  After I dried my hair, I checked on him and he was snoring away.  I think I need to put in some nose drops tomorrow.  It's 10pm and I've packed away the leftovers, washed the dishes, and tidied up the toys.  Day 4 is done.

Survival Test - Day 3 of 15

Rough morning. The boy woke up at 5:44am with an upset gassy stomach. He wanted to go to the potty but when he was on it, he was so uncomfortable and upset. He kept hugging me and arched his back. I put him onto the floor potty.

We went back to bed and I snuggled with him and rubbed his tummy. He got up and wanted some mum-mum. I made him some toast. He asked to go to the potty again, repeat of last potty episode. After, I got some toast into him. He made more poop in his diaper and again wanted to go to the washroom. This time he just wanted to play with the stuff in his bath tub, so I gave his bum a wipe and changed his dirty diaper. I hope he feels better soon.

He still has a dental appointment this morning. At least he seems to be happier at the moment. I'm letting him watch some television.

The dental appointment went pretty well. The boy got his teeth flossed and got a fluoride treatment.  He only started getting upset at the end.  He was happy when he got to pick a sticker.  We don't see her again until April.

After our appointment, we went to vv, then picked up some dim sum for an early lunch (10:30am).  The boy is tired and I don't want to push his nap later today since he probably needs his rest.  Tried to get him to eat some congee, but he didn't want it.  He ate some beef rice noodle roll, scallop dumpling, and a quarter bowl of oatmeal.  He fell asleep at 11am.  Time for me to finish the rest of the dim sum.  I'll have to give him a snack when he wakes up.  I think we'll skip the citrus today since I don't want to upset his stomach more.

I've finished my lunch, disinfected (ie. scrubbed) his toilet and potty, and am ready to take a nap.  I hope he'll sleep for another 30-60min.

The boy woke up but I was able to get him back to sleep, so I managed to take a little nap also.  He played with his golf set, but is now on my glider messing with the contents on our dresser and the radio.  Time to snack then take the garbage out.

Snacks: yogurt, a few bites of a granola bar and a cereal bar.

Dinner: me - rice, chicken, broccoli and potatoes.  Isaac - butternut squash, avocado, some chicken, and some broccoli.  A friend came over this evening and played Lego with us for a bit.  I just put him to bed, but he's standing in his crib saying "up up up".

Survival Test - Day 2 of 15

Last night wasn't too bad.  I went to bed at 11pm.  The boy woke up at 12:30am, and then again at 6am. He didn't want to go back to sleep and insisted on going to the potty.  Afterwards, I went back to bed, and he proceeded to play with his vacuum and bowling pins.

I got up at 8am.  We made chicken noodle soup with celery and carrots for breakfast.  The boy also had a big bowl of oatmeal and one mandarin.  He rediscovered his shape sorter toy and ring toy so he wanted to play with that while he ate.

By around 10am, he looked like he wanted a nap, but I tried to keep him up a bit longer.  I took him out to vv and picked up a couple of books.  On the way back home, he fell asleep at 11:25am.  We got one parcel in the mail today.  I'm still expecting one additional delivery today.

Lunch hour: me - a couple of turkey hot dogs.  I also rearranged the living room / dining room area.  That should interest the boy for a little once he wakes from his nap.  I'm giving him one hot dog and left-over spaghetti and a motts peach fruit cup for lunch.

Oh, I'm so mad!  I missed the delivery today because I was helping the boy to the potty at the time. Arrgh! Now I'll have to wait for them to try again tomorrow.  That sucks, I was planning to go out tomorrow.

Went to Toys R Us and Zellers.  Couldn't find a good bag for our swimming stuff.  He came home and snacked on a couple slices of an orange.

For dinner, I made the boy some soup noodles with chicken balls, fish tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables.  We went over to a friend's house, and I fed Isaac dinner there, then ate his leftovers and had some rice and chicken.  He played for a little, and we came home for his bath.

I put him in bed at 9pm.  I think he's still kicking his crib rails or moving around, but he's not complaining or anything so I'll just leave him alone.

Survival Test - Day 1 of 15

DH is away on business for 2 weeks.  It's the first time I'm left on my own with the boy for an extended amount of time.  I'm sure most people would have no problems, but me?  We're about to find out.  I normally cook... for fun, once in a blue moon, for special events.  For the next two weeks, not only do I have to cook everyday... I have to do it two or three times a day.  Ah!  What will we eat?  I guess there's always take-out.

I just dropped DH off at the airport and got lost going back home.  I got nervous and exited one street too early.  Turned around but ended up on the bridge.  We had to take a detour back home over the other bridge.

It's only 9:14am and the boy is already down for a nap?  His nap is NORMALLY around 12:30pm or 1:30pm.  He's going to need another nap this afternoon and I have serious doubts that he'll sleep willingly.  I think it's going to be a rough day.

I don't know how single moms get by but I guess I will have to get better organized and figure things out.

10:45am, the boy woke and called for Da-Da several times.  I had to tell him that Dada is gone to stay with Yeh-yeh and Ma-ma.

Lunch: me - leftovers.  boy - a jar of sweet potatoes, leftover mushrooms and tofu.

He won't let me finish my lunch and insists that I play lego with him.  Any time I step away, he destroys the structures and gets upset.

Snacks: yogurt, strawberry sauce, bites of a tomato cheese roll.

We went to vv, watched a car go through the car wash, went to the library for a story time, and stopped by the mall.  I dropped by The Bay to look for a sports bag, but didn't find anything large enough.  We set off the store alarm with one of our library videos.  One of the sales clerks were nice enough to demagnetize it for me. :)  As we walked back, I asked the boy if he wanted to go home.  He nodded yes.  Shortly after (around 3:44pm) he fell asleep in the stroller.

Time to think about dinner and fix one of the buttons from his chinese vest.

Dinner: spaghetti, meatballs, mushrooms, and tomatoes.  Dessert: mandarins.  He woke up from his nap at 5:10pm, we had dinner, web chatted with Daddy, and cleaned up.

Potty Training: First morning wearing underwear.

Potty training has been going relatively well.  He likes sitting on the potty because he gets special (flap/activity) books and flyers to read.  We still have some misses, but it looks like he's starting to hold for short stretches.  He's had a few completely dry diapers some of the time, so I wanted to put him in underwear for a couple of hours at a time.

I picked up some packs of underwear over the holidays and let him pick one to wear this morning while he was sitting on the potty.

My expectation is that he'll probably wet the underwear, but I just wanted to try to see what happens.  Time to get breakfast ready.  We'll have another potty session after he eats.
