I was diagnosed with pneumonia on boxing day after getting chest x-rays taken at the hospital. I took two antibiotics for a week and it helped clear up my fever and chills. I'm still feeling out of breath and find I tire easily. I went to a doctor to get a requisition for a follow-up chest x-ray. The doctor says my left lobe still sounds a bit softer than the other side... so it's possible that the pneumonia hasn't cleared up yet. He wants me to go get the x-ray today.
I'm going to get DH to drop me off at the radiology lab after we pick up the boy from school.

Good bye 2015
It sure was a rough year in terms of health. We had whooping cough (it's a really bad cough that lasts for 2+ months) in the spring with the boy being diagnosed with walking pneumonia as a secondary infection from the whooping cough, and again we picked up whooping cough in the winter (end of November) and ended off with me coming down with pneumonia. I went to a walk-in clinic on boxing day because I was feeling miserable and got sent to the hospital for a chest x-ray. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and sent home to rest. I've basically been bedridden for the past week. I'm still trying to get back on my feet.
What I don't get is why we're getting the whooping cough, and not just once, but twice this year. Our immunization are all up to date. Shouldn't that offer some protection? Is there some new strain or were we one of the few who weren't fully protected? According to the CDC, the vaccine is effective in 8 or 9 out of 10 children to get the shot, but the protection fades over time. About 7 out of 10 children are protected after 5 years from their last vaccination dose. So, the question is, for those whose immunization are not effective, do we need to go get vaccinated again? My doctor doesn't seem to have an answer for me.
Another disappointment for this year-end was that I had another miscarriage in mid-November and I had to deal with it by myself because DH was out of town. It was what I would call a chemical pregnancy. I had days of faint positive home pregnancy tests, so went to my doctor to get a requisition for a blood test. My beta hCG came back at 20 - which was considered inconclusive (< 5 is not pregnant - so yes, I was pregnant, but it was unclear if the pregnancy was viable or not). I got a set of blood requisitions from the doctor to continue testing - he was worried my pregnancy could be ectopic. I booked a blood test for every other day - dragging one or both kids with me. It was stressful waiting to get my results and disappointing when I saw the numbers. My hCG progression was (IU/L): 20, 24, 10, 3. My doctor wanted me to do one more test after, but I was feeling done with being poked. While it was disappointing, I surprisingly did not feel overwhelmed with sadness or grief. It just wasn't meant to be. We still want to try for a third, but my health is not the greatest at the moment and there are other factors as well. The only thing that makes me want to go for it anyways is that I feel like I'm running out of time. As I know my FSH is high, and my cycles are shortening - I feel like I'm hitting peri-menopause... My chances of miscarriages are high and will only get higher as I get older. I'm not worried about another miscarriage. I'm more concerned about whether my body can sustain another pregnancy. I guess I'll deal with it if I get pregnant, but in the meantime, I have to try to get well.
Finally, we ended off 2015 with an earthquake on Tuesday, December 29th at 11:39pm. Reports vary about the intensity, but the range was between 4.7-4.8 magnitude. I was in bed (still recovering from pneumonia) with the girl sleeping beside me. Suddenly I hear a loud sound (like something slamming into the side of our home) and the shaking started. We have a mirror behind the bed that was not secured and was rattling, I pushed it against the wall and felt the entire wall shaking. It lasted for 10 long seconds. I didn't follow the "stop, drop and take cover" guideline at all. While it wasn't a big quake, it was the first one I've felt and my hands wouldn't stop shaking afterwards for quite awhile. While there was no damage or power outage or tsunami, it certainly was a wake up call to show me just how unprepared we are. I've since ordered more emergency kits and supplies, but I still worry about future earthquakes if we decide to stay on the West Coast.
I'm not sad to see the end of 2015 and I hope for better things to come this year.

Lego Modular Sets
Ah!! I'm so excited. After staring at the pictures of the Pet Shop (10218), Grand Emporium (10211) and Fire Brigade (10197) on the Lego web site for awhile (well, since the Pet shop was released and I found out about the modular sets)... DH just bought me all three sets!
I can't wait for them to arrive. I don't know which I want to build first. When Daddy said he was buying me Lego, Isaac said he wanted Lego too. I think I will let him play with the finished sets. Of the three, he'll probably enjoy the Fire Brigade most.
I guess I should give an update about the boy too. He is currently sick. He has a runny nose and a cough with phlegm. He's been sick since Saturday evening. We ended up skipping out on the Wall-E screening at the planetarium on Sunday. He also missed his cooking class and Twos Time this week. We did end up going trick-or-treating at the mall. I figured it would be ok since we were just staying indoors.
This morning Isaac and I woke up later than usual (8am instead of 6:30-7am). We stayed home all day. We spent the morning watching Cars and playing with Lego Duplo and K'nex. After lunch, we tidied up all the toys and moved some stuff around to make space for the Christmas tree. I put the tree up in the afternoon. We spent the rest of the afternoon making "presents" to put under the tree. I made 4 Lego boxes with lego ribbons. Isaac made 2 Duplo "presents" that look like rockets. One is for Mommy and one is for Daddy. He skipped his nap today and started falling asleep on the carpet at around 5:30pm while playing with his Duplo trains and track. I kept him up because it really was too late for a nap and he either would've missed dinner or wouldn't sleep until late. We ended up putting him to bed at around 6:45pm with mommy milk and a story. He was out as soon as we turned off the lights. His nose is raw from me trying to remove/clear his mucus. Poor boy. I hope he'll sleep well tonight and feels better soon. I really want him to be able to go to school tomorrow.
Update: Isaac is staying home today. Mucous is still yellow. Playgroup tomorrow, I'll have to see how he's doing tomorrow morning before we decide if he gets to go. Swimming lessons start Saturday... and that's also up in the air. Sunday we're meeting up with a friend from our birth group.

Food Poisoning - Day 2
Last night was ok, though he did try to throw up before bed.
This morning Daddy was feeling better, but Isaac seemed to be a bit lethargic. He woke up at 7am, but went back to sleep until 8am. After, he mostly sat/lay beside me for the morning. He didn't want any pedialyte or Gatorade - but did want baby food. I gave him some but he threw up after eating. He fell asleep on the sofa at 11am.

Toddler Food Poisoned
At around 3:30am we hear sounds of gurgling... Isaac is standing up in his crib retching. There is a putrid sweet smell beside my bed. After several bouts of vomiting, he seems to be doing ok - though he's wide awake right now. I'm hoping it gets through his system soon. Daddy seems similarly afflicted. It must've been something they both ate (we're suspecting the mango).
We stripped down his crib and clothes. Two clothing changes later, we are sitting in front of the tv watching some Word World. It seems like each time he lies down he throws up. He doesn't want any water and seems fearful of vomiting.
I definitely need to pick up some pedialyte for him tomorrow. I hope his system settles down soon! I'll try to keep him hydrated and if he's still throwing up after 3 days or if he seems dehydrated, we'll take him in to see a doctor.
I guess tomorrow we'll have something easy on the tummy like congee.
At around 5:30am, we were able to get Isaac back to bed. He spent part of the night with us in our bed. Up a bit after 8am. He asked for lots of water. Then he needed to sit on the potty for awhile.
He seems relatively happy. We'll see how the rest of the day goes. Running on low sleep may be difficult.
Isaac just got a package from Toys R Us this morning at 8:40am. Not sure who it's from. I'll have to open it later to check.
More diarrhea and another bout of vomiting... but at least it was in the bathroom this time so it's easier to clean up. I gave the boy a bath afterwards and he's drinking some Gatorade right now. Laundry laundry laundry. I think we have 3 loads to do. I just started one. We'll also need to use the steam vacuum on the carpets... though I suspect that he'll still throw up some more before the day is through.
He gulped down the Gatorade and is asking for more. I'm not sure if I should give him more - though it does help replace some of the electrolytes he's lost. Isaac is playing and seems happy (except when he throws up). Daddy is still feeling sick and is resting in bed.
- I took out the garbage, disinfected the kitchen sink, and both bathrooms. 2 Loads of laundry done, 1 to go.
I heated up some chicken noodle soup and gave some to the boy but he couldn't stomach it. It came back up... But he does seem to be tolerating Gatorade in small doses.
I put Isaac down for a nap at 1pm. Then I ordered myself some lunch and went to pick up my order and stop by the grocery store. I got Daddy some more Gatorade, and I got Isaac some pedialyte freezer pops and apple flavoured pedialyte. Hopefully he will like one of them. I also ordered a congee for them. I stopped by Value Village on my way home and picked up a couple of building toys (one is for me and one is for the boy) and a turtle step-stool. Since he needs to spit and wash his hands more, it'll be easier for me to stand on a stool instead of lifting him up to the sink.
Just got home. Both Daddy and Isaac are still napping. Now it's a race against time for me to eat lunch and try to have a short nap before Isaac gets up. Oh no, I hear some movement from the crib. I hope he keeps sleeping!!
Almost done lunch... and they're still sleeping. Phew! It would be perfect if the wash finishes soon so that I can load the dryer then take a nap.
On the weekend, I checked the weather forecast and Wednesday is predicted to be a beautiful day. I had been hoping to take Isaac to the fair again but in light of the current situation, he will be staying home for the next few days. Sounds like the washer has stopped.

Sick
Ugh. I have a sore throat, stuffy nose, my ear hurts and I feel a bit woozy. I'm so glad Daddy didn't have to go away for training this week! I'm just heating up some chicken noodle soup for myself. I hope I don't infect the boy. Daddy has a meeting right now, so I'm up.
Gave the boy some chicken noodle soup, oatmeal, and mandarins for breakfast. I think we're going to have a "tv/movie" sort of day. I'm not really up for going out today. It's too bad since the weather is decent.
Utter chaos. Following the sound of my blaring radio, I found the boy with Canesten cream smeared all over his face, his hands and the dresser. He lost the lid. I don't think he ate too much of it so he should be ok. In the living room, the toy "kitchen" I made from boxes for him has been turned over. Toy food strewn over the floor. Baby sign language cards scattered about. I guess the toy mess is normal.
I wasn't planning to go out today, but I think I have no choice. The boy needs to be taken out for a walk.
We went out and it was windy. After a short visit to Value Village (it was crazy there today because of their sale), we left and went back home to get Isaac's boots. We went back out to splash in some puddles, then went back home again. In the lobby, we bumped into someone taking their dog out for a walk so Isaac got to pet the dog. The boy fell asleep before lunch.
After Isaac woke up, the fire alarm went off so we decided to go to the mall instead of just waiting around. I looked at party supplies at Zellers but didn't see what I was looking for. We stopped by Toys R Us to take a look. Then we went to buy some veggies and pastries.
Bad afternoon and evening. I napped. Isaac destroyed some of Daddy's things. Isaac also didn't want to eat the dinner Daddy made, so Daddy wasn't happy. They both went to bed at around 8pm.
I'm starting to plan Isaac's birthday party. I have under 2 months to get everything ready. I have a theme in mind already and have bought some party decorations already. I'll blog about it next time. I'm going to try to go to bed early tonight.

Survival Test - Day 3 of 15
Rough morning. The boy woke up at 5:44am with an upset gassy stomach. He wanted to go to the potty but when he was on it, he was so uncomfortable and upset. He kept hugging me and arched his back. I put him onto the floor potty.
We went back to bed and I snuggled with him and rubbed his tummy. He got up and wanted some mum-mum. I made him some toast. He asked to go to the potty again, repeat of last potty episode. After, I got some toast into him. He made more poop in his diaper and again wanted to go to the washroom. This time he just wanted to play with the stuff in his bath tub, so I gave his bum a wipe and changed his dirty diaper. I hope he feels better soon.
He still has a dental appointment this morning. At least he seems to be happier at the moment. I'm letting him watch some television.
The dental appointment went pretty well. The boy got his teeth flossed and got a fluoride treatment. He only started getting upset at the end. He was happy when he got to pick a sticker. We don't see her again until April.
After our appointment, we went to vv, then picked up some dim sum for an early lunch (10:30am). The boy is tired and I don't want to push his nap later today since he probably needs his rest. Tried to get him to eat some congee, but he didn't want it. He ate some beef rice noodle roll, scallop dumpling, and a quarter bowl of oatmeal. He fell asleep at 11am. Time for me to finish the rest of the dim sum. I'll have to give him a snack when he wakes up. I think we'll skip the citrus today since I don't want to upset his stomach more.
I've finished my lunch, disinfected (ie. scrubbed) his toilet and potty, and am ready to take a nap. I hope he'll sleep for another 30-60min.
The boy woke up but I was able to get him back to sleep, so I managed to take a little nap also. He played with his golf set, but is now on my glider messing with the contents on our dresser and the radio. Time to snack then take the garbage out.
Snacks: yogurt, a few bites of a granola bar and a cereal bar.
Dinner: me - rice, chicken, broccoli and potatoes. Isaac - butternut squash, avocado, some chicken, and some broccoli. A friend came over this evening and played Lego with us for a bit. I just put him to bed, but he's standing in his crib saying "up up up".

Diapers and leaks
Isaac has a cold and has a miserable time trying to breath when he's sleeping. I let him stay in bed with us part of the night. I woke up feeling something wet. His diaper leaked all over our bed. It's the second leak this week. Looks like we may have to go back to changing his diaper once a night again. The Huggies overnight diapers don't seem to make a big difference for us.
Fumbling around in the dark, we stripped him of his pajama pants, changed his diapers, and threw a couple of receiving blankets over the wet spots. It's good that we have a waterproof mattress cover. At some point, Isaac woke up again so I nursed him and put him back into his crib.
I woke up this morning and Isaac was standing in his crib crying to be nursed. I went to pick him up and found him bare-bottomed. His diaper was discarded onto the floor by his crib. There was a big wet spot on his sheets... Looks like we have a big load of laundry this morning.
Now that he's figured out how to remove his diapers... he'll probably try this again. I hope that putting pants on him will deter him from taking off his diapers, but I think it'll just slow him down and not actually stop him. I guess he likes being free of his diapers. If we could potty train him earlier then I wouldn't mind him going diaper-free... Our potty training progress is still a hit or miss each day with the poops. I haven't attempted any pee-training yet.
